Vitamin C or Ascorbic Acid has multiple functions in the body, either as a potent scavenger antioxidant, coenzyme or cofactor. It is present and essential to the normal functioning of all cellular units including subcellular structures such as ribosomes and mitochondria (the powerhouse of the cell). The ability of ascorbic acid to lose and take on hydrogen gives it an essential role in metabolism.

Note: Under stress, when adrenal cortical hormone activity is high, ascorbic acid concentrate in the tissue is decreased. During periods of emotional, psychological or physiological stress, the urinary excretion of ascorbic acid is increased.
