Coenzyme Q 10 and Vitamin E

Coenzyme Q 10 is essential for the production of energy: Coenzyme Q 10 (CoQ10) and ubiquinine are names for the same powerful antioxidant. This antioxidant is a lipid-like substance similar to vitamin K and is present in all cell nuclei and microsomes. It is concentrated in the mitochondria (the powerhouse in a cell) and functions in the respiratory chain in which energy is released from energy-yielding nutrients as ATP.

Coenzyme Q 10 is a potent antioxidant:
An oxygen atom in the body contains pairs of electrons. With normal metabolism, a single electron can be lost making the oxygen atom unstable – a free radical. This free radical will now try to replace the lost electron by stealing from other molecules. A chain reaction is triggered of stealing the electrons leaving damaged cells behind.

>Note:This oxidative reaction is now considered to be one of the leading contributing factors in aging and age-related diseases.

Antioxidants can lose an electron to a free radical without becoming unstable. The oxygen molecule now returns to the normal healthy state and no harmful chain reaction takes place.

Benefits of COQ10:

  • Increase energy
  • Improvement of heart function
  • Boost the immune system
  • Possibly extend life

** Another crucial role of COQ10 in the prevention of cardiovascular disease is its ability to recycle the oxidized form of vitamin E back to its reduced form. COQ10 prevents the prooxidant effect of alpha tocopherol and increases resistance to LDL cholesterol oxidation.
